Yeah, I know it sounds unbelieveable, bizarre, even, but those wacky folks over at Skybus Airlines, Inc. have a deal where they offer one of the cheapest air fares that I've ever heard of: 10 $10 seats on flights originating from a handful of destinations. A Boston Globe reporter was feeling adventurous and booked one of these cheap air fares and described the experience in an article posted on the Times Herald-Record website. Now here's what this intrepid reporter said about the Skybus cheap airfare tickets: "Skybus began twice-daily flights from Stewart International Airport in New Windsor to Columbus, Ohio. And starting Feb. 25, it will fly two times a day from Stewart to Greensboro, N.C. Skybus can offer those cheap air fares because a lot of amenities that are usually included in airfares are not. Passengers must pay for beverages (water costs $2 a bottle), checked luggage ($5 a bag per flight), and pillows ($12 each). But the biggest hurdle is scoring one of the coveted cheap seats. In the end, we found the airline's $10 deal works best for people who have lots of time and flexibility." So, what it sounds like is that the budget air fares Skybus is offering are really more of gimmick than a viable and reliable travel option. As the reporter noted, by the end of the journey, after factoring in all the extra charges, the budget air fares one-way flights purchased wound up costing $122.35, including ground transportation, checking baggage, and the few amenities that the reporter purchased during the trip.
